Olmsted and Vaux first conceived the idea of a connective ‘pleasure drive’ in 1866, when creating their proposal for Prospect Park. Two years later they officially coined the term Parkway. At 210 feet-wide, Ocean Parkway was initially funded by the residents who lived along the five mile path. Disagreements surrounding this arrangement delayed progress

Olmsted and Vaux first conceived the idea of a connective ‘pleasure drive’ in 1866, when creating their proposal for Prospect Park. Two years later they officially coined the term Parkway. At 210 feet-wide, Ocean Parkway was initially funded by the residents who lived along the five mile path. Disagreements surrounding this arrangement delayed progress, until an act passed in 1872 required the City of Brooklyn to pay all costs. The act also gave the Brooklyn Park Commission control over the ornamentation of the houses within 30 feet from the parkway.
