F.L. Olmsted mentions working on his plan for the cemetery in Oakland when he was in California managing the Mariposa Estate gold mines in 1864. Plans for the cemetery, produced after he returned East, are under Job 09685. Olmsted and Calvert Vaux’s planting plan (09685-6) for the 209 acres did not call for dense greenery but rather suggested“ the whole ground to be covered with trees and shrubs - after a few years densely covered- because we cannot expect good turf to be maintained very long in any of them.” [FLO to M.C. Meigs_02-08-1970_FLOP-SF-R24_im.4] The plan included a main road up the hill of the cemetery that would cut directly through the grounds.
