The preliminary plan for Piedmont Park was drawn by the Olmsted Brothers in 1912, three years after the land was obtained for park purposes by the City of Atlanta (plan 02744-14). The Chairman of the Improvement Committee of the Park Commission of Atlanta requested the firm create a plan “to convert its property known as Piedmont Exposition Grounds, containing 186 acres, into a public park.”

The Chairman of the Improvement Committee of the Park Commission of Atlanta requested the firm create a plan “to convert its property known as Piedmont Exposition Grounds, containing 186 acres, into a public park.” [Ellis Jr. to Olmsted Brothers_03-15-1909_LOC-OAR-B-R97_im.2] In 1909 John Charles Olmsted visited the site and included in his sketch designs “the filling of lake, the execution of Little Folks Ground and Shelter… a public comfort house and shelter…and grading drive up over hill.” [Visit by J.C. Olmsted_10-19-1909_LOC-OAR-B-R97_im.21] The final plan was in typical picturesque-style and included several recreational facilities, such as a conservancy, sand courts, and baseball fields, as well as curvilinear walking paths.
